Stellite 6 & Stellite 12 Cobalt Alloy Powder for Laser Cladding, Valve, Oil & Gas and Industrial Wear Protection
Product Overview
GREENSTONE Stellite 6 and Stellite 12 cobalt-based alloy powders are high-performance Co-Cr-W alloy materials engineered for laser cladding, Directed Energy Deposition (DED), PTA hardfacing, HVOF thermal spraying, and industrial surface engineering.
Both alloys combine excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high-temperature stability, and metal-to-metal wear performance, making them suitable for demanding components operating under abrasion, erosion, friction, heat, and corrosive environments.
Stellite 6 provides a balanced combination of hardness, toughness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, making it a versatile choice for valve seats, valve components, pump components, shafts, sealing surfaces, and industrial repair applications.
Stellite 12 has higher carbon and tungsten content and typically provides greater hardness and abrasion resistance than Stellite 6. It is particularly suitable for cutting components, extrusion equipment, industrial tooling, wear plates, valve components, and other severe-wear applications.
GREENSTONE supplies spherical cobalt alloy powders with particle size distributions optimized for different powder-based manufacturing and coating processes.
High Wear and Erosion Resistance
The Co-Cr-W alloy system forms a wear-resistant cobalt matrix reinforced by chromium- and tungsten-rich carbides. This microstructure provides excellent resistance to abrasive wear, adhesive wear, erosion, galling, and metal-to-metal friction.
Stellite 12 generally offers higher hardness and abrasion resistance, while Stellite 6 provides a more balanced combination of wear resistance, toughness, corrosion resistance, and machinability.
Excellent High-Temperature Performance
The cobalt-based matrix maintains useful mechanical properties at elevated temperatures and provides good resistance to thermal degradation. This makes Stellite alloy powders suitable for components exposed to repeated heating, friction, and demanding industrial operating conditions.
Corrosion and Oxidation Resistance
High chromium content provides strong resistance to oxidation and many corrosive industrial environments. Stellite 6 and Stellite 12 coatings are therefore widely used in valves, pumps, petrochemical equipment, power-generation components, marine equipment, and process-industry machinery.
Optimized for Laser Cladding and DED
GREENSTONE cobalt alloy powders can be supplied with controlled particle morphology and particle-size distribution to provide:
- Stable powder feeding and good flowability
- Consistent deposition during laser cladding and DED
- Dense deposited layers with low porosity under optimized processing conditions
- Strong metallurgical bonding with suitable substrates
- Controlled dilution and uniform coating performance
- Custom particle-size distributions for different deposition processes
Stellite 6 – Balanced General-Purpose Wear Protection
Stellite 6 is commonly selected where the component requires a balance between hardness, toughness, corrosion resistance, erosion resistance, and thermal stability.
Typical applications include valve seats and gates, pump components, sealing surfaces, shafts, bushings, bearing surfaces, oil & gas components, and industrial component repair.
Stellite 12 – Higher Hardness for Severe Wear
Stellite 12 contains higher levels of carbon and tungsten than Stellite 6, resulting in increased carbide formation and higher hardness. It is preferred for applications dominated by abrasion, sliding wear, erosion, and severe surface degradation.
Typical applications include cutting tools, extrusion screws, industrial knives, dies, wear plates, valve components, and heavy-duty wear surfaces.
Multiple Powder Processing Options
Depending on the required application and equipment, GREENSTONE can provide particle-size distributions suitable for laser cladding, DED additive manufacturing, PTA hardfacing, HVOF, and thermal spraying.
