Cobalt-Based Alloy Powder for Laser Cladding, DED Additive Manufacturing, PTA, HVOF, Oil & Gas, Valve and High-Temperature Wear Applications

Product Overview

GREENSTONE Cobalt-Based Alloy Powder is a range of high-performance cobalt alloy powders engineered for laser cladding, Directed Energy Deposition (DED), Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) hardfacing, thermal spraying and industrial surface engineering.

The portfolio includes Co-Cr-W, Co-Cr-Mo, Co-Cr-B-Si and Co-Cr-Mo-W alloy systems, providing an optimized combination of high-temperature wear resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, hot hardness and metallurgical stability. Depending on alloy chemistry and processing requirements, different grades can be selected for abrasive wear, adhesive wear, erosion, cavitation, corrosion and elevated-temperature service.

GREENSTONE cobalt-based alloy powders are suitable for the manufacture, coating and repair of valves, valve seats, pump components, mechanical seals, shafts, sleeves, extrusion components, cutting tools, engine components, petrochemical equipment, mining machinery and other high-value industrial parts exposed to severe wear, corrosion and heat.

Powder chemistry, particle-size distribution and morphology can be optimized for different processes including laser cladding, DED metal additive manufacturing, PTA welding, HVOF/HVAF thermal spraying and powder metallurgy.

Multiple Cobalt Alloy Systems for Different Service Conditions

GREENSTONE supplies cobalt-based powders covering several major metallurgical systems rather than relying on a single alloy chemistry.

Co-Cr-W alloys combine a cobalt matrix with chromium and tungsten-rich hard phases. They provide excellent resistance to sliding wear, metal-to-metal wear, erosion and high-temperature degradation, making them particularly suitable for valve seats, cutting components, bearing surfaces and other severe-wear parts.

Co-Cr-Mo alloys emphasize corrosion resistance together with wear and elevated-temperature performance. Molybdenum improves resistance in demanding chemical and corrosive environments, making these powders suitable for chemical processing, petrochemical, marine, pump and valve applications.

Co-Cr-B-Si and self-fluxing cobalt alloys use controlled additions of boron and silicon to improve melting behavior, wetting and deposit formation. These alloys are suitable for hardfacing processes where dense coatings, strong metallurgical bonding and high hardness are required.

Co-Cr-Mo-W alloys combine multiple strengthening mechanisms and are designed for severe service involving combinations of heat, corrosion, erosion and mechanical wear.

Excellent High-Temperature Wear Resistance

One of the key advantages of cobalt-based alloys is their ability to maintain useful hardness and wear resistance at temperatures where many conventional iron-based hardfacing materials begin to soften.

This makes cobalt alloy powder particularly valuable for components subjected to high-temperature sliding, friction, erosion and thermal cycling.

Strong Corrosion and Oxidation Resistance

High chromium contents promote the formation of a protective oxide layer, while alloying additions such as molybdenum can further improve performance in aggressive environments.

Selected cobalt-based grades are therefore suitable for chemical processing equipment, oil & gas components, marine equipment, pumps, valves and corrosive fluid-handling systems.

Excellent Metal-to-Metal Wear Performance

Cobalt-based alloys are widely selected for components where two metallic surfaces repeatedly contact each other under load. Their combination of matrix toughness and hard carbide phases provides strong resistance to galling, adhesive wear and surface degradation.

Typical components include:

  • Valve seats and valve sealing surfaces
  • Shafts and sleeves
  • Mechanical seals
  • Pump components
  • Bearings and bushings
  • Extrusion and forming components
  • Cutting and shear tools
  • Engine and power-generation components
  • Oil & gas drilling and production equipment
  • Petrochemical processing components

Optimized for Laser Cladding and DED

GREENSTONE powders can be supplied with controlled particle-size distributions and morphology for stable powder feeding and consistent melt-pool behavior.

For laser processing, suitable powder characteristics help achieve:

stable powder flow, uniform deposition, low dilution, dense metallurgical bonding, controlled coating thickness and repeatable multi-layer deposition.

This makes the powders suitable not only for surface coating but also for industrial remanufacturing, dimensional restoration and DED additive manufacturing.

Particle Size Customization

Typical particle-size ranges can be supplied according to the deposition technology:

15–45 μm — fine powder for selected additive manufacturing and precision deposition processes
45–106 μm — laser cladding and DED applications
53–150 μm — laser cladding, DED and thermal spray applications depending on equipment
75–150 μm — PTA and hardfacing applications
Customized PSD — available according to powder feeder, nozzle design and deposition process

Actual particle size should always be selected according to the equipment configuration and process window.

Industrial Advantages

GREENSTONE cobalt-based alloy powders provide:

High-temperature wear resistance — maintains performance under elevated-temperature friction and erosion.

Corrosion and oxidation resistance — chromium-rich cobalt matrices perform well in aggressive industrial environments.

Excellent hot hardness — suitable for components exposed to simultaneous heat and mechanical loading.

Strong metallurgical bonding — optimized powders can produce dense coatings through laser cladding and PTA processes.

Low dilution capability — laser cladding enables functional cobalt alloy layers while limiting excessive mixing with the substrate.

Good powder flowability — controlled morphology and particle-size distribution support stable feeding.

Repair and remanufacturing capability — restores worn high-value components and extends service life.

Flexible alloy selection — chemistry can be selected according to wear, corrosion, temperature and substrate requirements.

Technical Note: Chemical composition, hardness and particle-size distribution vary significantly between cobalt alloy families. Final powder selection should be based on the substrate material, service temperature, corrosion medium, wear mechanism, deposition process and required coating properties. The values above therefore represent the GREENSTONE cobalt-based alloy powder product family rather than a certificate specification for one individual grade.
