42CrMo Low-Alloy Steel Powder for Laser Cladding, Thermal Spray and Industrial Component Repair

Product Overview

GREENSTONE 42CrMo Low-Alloy Steel Powder is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel powder developed for laser cladding, HVOF/HVAF thermal spraying, plasma spraying, cold spraying, surface repair and industrial remanufacturing applications.

The 42CrMo alloy system combines good strength, hardness, toughness, fatigue resistance and wear performance. Chromium (Cr) contributes to hardenability and wear and corrosion performance, while molybdenum (Mo) improves strength, thermal stability and resistance to fatigue under demanding operating conditions.

With controlled particle size distribution and good powder flowability, GREENSTONE 42CrMo powder is suitable for surface strengthening, dimensional restoration and protective coating of industrial components such as shafts, gears, hydraulic rods, rollers, transmission components, mining machinery parts and heavy-duty mechanical components.

Different particle size distributions can be supplied according to the requirements of laser cladding, thermal spraying and other powder deposition processes.

42CrMo Chromium-Molybdenum Low-Alloy Steel

42CrMo is a widely used Cr-Mo low-alloy steel characterized by its combination of strength, toughness, hardenability and fatigue resistance.

The typical composition provided for this powder includes approximately 0.38–0.45% C, 0.9–1.2% Cr and 0.15–0.30% Mo, with iron as the balance.

This alloy chemistry makes the powder particularly suitable for industrial components exposed to mechanical loading, friction, impact and cyclic service conditions.

Excellent Wear Resistance

Deposited 42CrMo material provides good resistance to mechanical wear and is suitable for restoring or reinforcing worn surfaces.

Typical applications include:

  • Shaft repair and surface strengthening
  • Industrial roller restoration
  • Gear and transmission component repair
  • Hydraulic piston rod protection
  • Mining machinery components
  • Heavy-duty mechanical parts

High Strength and Good Toughness

Unlike extremely hard but brittle coating systems, 42CrMo provides a useful balance between hardness, strength and toughness.

This makes it particularly suitable for dynamically loaded components where resistance to impact and fatigue is important in addition to surface wear resistance.

Suitable for Laser Cladding and Remanufacturing

42CrMo powder can be selected for compatible laser cladding and laser remanufacturing applications involving dimensional restoration, localized surface strengthening and repair of steel components.

Laser cladding provides metallurgical bonding between the deposited material and suitable substrates while allowing controlled heat input and localized processing.

Final coating properties depend on the substrate, powder specification, laser parameters, dilution rate and subsequent heat treatment.

Optimized for HVOF / HVAF Thermal Spray

GREENSTONE 42CrMo powder can also be supplied for HVOF (High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel) and HVAF (High-Velocity Air Fuel) thermal spray processes.

High-velocity spraying can produce dense coatings with strong adhesion while limiting excessive thermal exposure of the feedstock and substrate.

According to the supplied reference data, optimized HVOF coatings can achieve bond strength above approximately 70 MPa, depending on coating preparation and process conditions.

Compatible with Plasma and Cold Spray Processes

Appropriate powder specifications can also be selected for plasma spraying and cold spraying, expanding the material’s use across different surface engineering and repair processes.

The actual particle size distribution should be selected according to the deposition technology and equipment.

Controlled Powder Morphology and Flowability

The powder is supplied with controlled particle characteristics to support reliable powder feeding and deposition.

A typical particle size distribution of 15–53 μm is available, while customized ranges can be supplied for different processing technologies.

Heat-Treatable Mechanical Properties

42CrMo is responsive to heat treatment, allowing the final mechanical properties of deposited or repaired components to be adjusted according to service requirements.

The source data indicates a typical as-deposited/as-sprayed hardness of approximately HRC 30–50, with further property adjustment possible through suitable subsequent heat treatment.

Cost-Effective Industrial Material

Compared with many nickel- and cobalt-based alloy systems, 42CrMo provides an economical solution for applications that primarily require mechanical strength, wear resistance, toughness and component restoration rather than extreme-temperature or severe-corrosion performance.

This makes it attractive for large-scale repair and remanufacturing of industrial machinery.

Broad Industrial Applications

Steel Industry: Industrial rolls, shafts and mechanical transmission components.

Mining: Gears, shafts and wear-loaded machinery components.

Construction Machinery: Hydraulic rods, transmission parts and mechanical components.

Energy & Power: Rotating components, shafts and machinery repair.

Automotive & Transportation: Gears, shafts and transmission components.

Industrial Remanufacturing: Dimensional restoration, worn-part repair and localized surface strengthening.
